The U.S. economic recovery looks promising but it’s still a gut-wrenching roller coaster ride at times.

The Dow Jones and S&P 500 indexes have grown steadily (with volatility) since late 2012 but were relatively flat from January 2015 to mid-August 2015. The American Institute of Architects’ Architecture Billings Index showed increased levels of non-residential construction in 13 of the previous 15 months, but dropped in April 2015 for the second month this year, presumably because severe winter weather delayed projects in the Northeast and Midwest. Conversely, McGraw-Hill’s 2015 Dodge Construction Outlook predicted that total U.S. construction starts for 2015 would rise 9% to $612 billion, with commercial building starts jumping by 15%.
