It's Time to Get Uncomfortable

I love September. It is the time of year where people start thinking about planning for the next year. They are back to work after summer, and they are ramped up for the health insurance renewals coming the next few months. It is a time of reflection as well as a time to think about the future.

The past is always a worthy thing to look at and remember. It is something we should look at to appreciate where we have come from and make sure we don’t repeat any bad history. However, I believe we have entered into a business world where the past is less relevant than any time in history. The future has Artificial Intelligence, algorithm driven process for insurance, cultural change, millennial generation decision making, political unrest, and complete uncertainty.

So what will all of this mean? The following thoughts may help you through your reflection and planning for 2018+. I hope it challenges you to become great:

A lot of my attention in 2015 has been on the impact of planning in business.  I have observed different brokerage/agency planning techniques, strategies, and systems. The results have been very disappointing.   Here are my findings: 

Agencies are not planning toward their desired purpose. 

It seems like every insurance agency has a passionate “vision” or purpose of remaining an independent insurance agency. But, the planning focuses on being better at what they are doing today.  They pick items randomly to work on based on what people would “like to have happen” that year.

In big move, Accenture will get rid of annual performance reviews and rankings

This story recently published on The Washington Post. It's nice to see highly corporate organziations moving this direction. 

In 1988 I became a manager.  The company was a huge multi billion-dollar organization with very strict performance management systems to follow.  It took me one “annual review” season to determine it was the biggest waste of everyone’s time, including the people being reviewed, as well as my time!

Stop It to Move Forward!

It's 2015 and many things have changed in the insurance industry. Our employees have more differences than any time in history. Insurance products are more complex as risks become more complex. Buyer behaviors continue to evolve. Most of all, many old techniques that seem logical and used to work, are no longer effective. 
So, we need to stop some stuff and start doing some other things.
