It's Time to Get Uncomfortable

I love September. It is the time of year where people start thinking about planning for the next year. They are back to work after summer, and they are ramped up for the health insurance renewals coming the next few months. It is a time of reflection as well as a time to think about the future.

The past is always a worthy thing to look at and remember. It is something we should look at to appreciate where we have come from and make sure we don’t repeat any bad history. However, I believe we have entered into a business world where the past is less relevant than any time in history. The future has Artificial Intelligence, algorithm driven process for insurance, cultural change, millennial generation decision making, political unrest, and complete uncertainty.

So what will all of this mean? The following thoughts may help you through your reflection and planning for 2018+. I hope it challenges you to become great:

"I Will Either Find a Way Or Make One"

I was feeding my appetite for history recently, when I began reading the stories of the great Carthaginian commander, Hannibal, when he spoke the above. The Latin to English translation is "I will either find a way or make one."  He is credited with this response when his generals told him it was impossible to cross the Alps into Italy, by elephant, during the Second Punic War (around 218 BC). This turned out to be one of Hannibal's greatest achievements in a military career that earns him praise today as one of history's great strategists.

Zappos, Nike and Apple are all highly recognized brands. We tend to think a brand is simply a slogan or a logo. However, a brand is much deeper than artwork. Brand is simply defined as “what OTHERS think of you”. We all have a brand. A company has a brand and we as individuals all have a brand too! The way we communicate, the language we use, the quality of our work, how well we work with our colleagues and family members determine our brand. Here is a quick little test. If I was to ask your fellow team members, friends or family members to list three attributes to describe you (positive, negative or neutral), what would they say? That is your brand, whether you like it or not. Remember, it’s what others think of you not what you think of yourself. The great thing about a brand is you can manage it, enhance it and even change it! A company’s brand is created by the team members it employs.
